In the city of Taroudant, south of Morocco, in 2024, "tawsnalab" was born as an independent research space, offering a platform for practicing and experimenting with contemporary forms of artistic and cultural expression, and exploring alternative perspectives through free critical action and participatory discussion.
At "tawsnalab", we operate within a local culture striving to function within a decolonial Southern discourse that seeks to shed cultural dependency and forms of colonial imagination. We elevate the perspectives of local cultures that confront centered thinking, creating spaces for liberation and production with alternative narratives that oppose the commodification and dominant capitalist cultural economy.
At "tawsnalab", we focus on working within artistic and research practices that are aligned with their political context, characterized by anticipation, and their historical condition, which lacks a civilizational model, and their crisis-ridden social horizon. We maintain a scrutinizing critical vision that does not succumb to the forces of political economy that have imposed a kind of curtailment of freedoms and control of spaces of expression, nor does it accept the relegation of art to a market of hierarchical relationships that empties it of its values.
At "tawsnalab", we defend the right to equal access to knowledge within a cultural justice that guarantees everyone, regardless of their location, equitable funding and open, solidarity-based networking with a horizontal dimension. It also guarantees the recipient a cultural citizenship that enables their right to appreciate artistic and cultural productions.
At "tawsnalab", we aim to produce scientific knowledge that serves as the foundation for spatial planning decisions through an in-depth understanding of local culture and social practices. This knowledge also supports the dynamics of public space and public cultural policies, and enhances the presence of art in daily life in a way that questions memory, language, the environment, and the future.
Our mission at "tawsnalab" is independent cultural action that questions the meaning of contemporary expressive forms and artistic practices from the moment of their production, reception, and interpretation. We track their circulation as they question their relationship with the personal, the everyday “life”, and the common public sphere.
